Kamchatka Region, exact location of the earthquake’s epicenter

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region at a depth of 51 km (32 miles), the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said on Saturday. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said there was a small tsunami threat.

Despite the warnings, experts say there is no longer any reason to panic. The Kamchatka region is an inhospitable region, with only 289 thousand citizens, according to official estimates for 2023.

Despite the scare, no seriously injured people were reported, only objects and small structures were broken. In 1952, the area has suffered a big earthquake of 9.0 mg, which was said to have triggered a large tsunami.
